This week for Phonics we practiced reviewing sounds for vowels and consonants, as well as recalling sight words. We continue to use our Sight Word Super Powers to recall sight words. It helps us quickly identify sight words in word searches, unscramble letters to spell those words, search other words that rhyme with them, and use those sight words words to help spell other words! These are the same words we practiced for homework this week! Please see the homework calendar for a list of the words we practiced.
During this time, we also worked on our phonological awareness by tapping sounds we hear in short words, breaking up words in compound words, replacing and deleting words in a compound word, as well as counting words in a sentence. We also practiced how to say sentences using gestures to remind us to use capitals and various ending marks. Ask us how we do this with a sentence to say out loud! We can show you!
For Readers Workshop, we talked about how we can read LONG and STRONG! We talked about how we put our books in a stack, in the order we want to read them. We talked about making goals for reading on a sticky note. We also have a place to put our books when we've read them.
We continue to review how to book shop in our room and choose books that are just right for us! We practiced a 5 finger rule to help us determine if it's just right! We also have reading, so we don't have to read at our desk! This helps us get comfy when reading. We shared connections and things we like about our books with our reading partners.
For Writers Workshop, we are learning the steps to writing a story. First we come up with an idea, then we plan across pages by touching and orally telling the story. Then if it's enough to fill the pages, we sketch before we write. Sketching helps us remember what to put on each page, so we can write the next day. After tapping sounds and writing a sentence on each page using First, Next, Then, Last .... we go back to fancy it up. We can add more, fix words, fix letters, add periods, add capitals.
We are working on writing a piece together to get the hang of this new writing plan.
This week we are working on learning various materials to help us with our number sense. We are learning about ten frames, how to count on, how to use a number line, and all about fluency with doubles facts.
This week we continued to discuss authority figures in our school and help us, like teachers, principals, special area teachers, and custodians.
We will start a Science Unit in a few weeks. However, we did get to enjoy some STEM activities on Friday afternoon, building and creating things with various objects!
Most of our work is saved in either our journals, folders or binders at school. We will also put our completed sheets in our mailbox at school. We will empty out our mailboxes and take home our work to share with you.
